The first settlement in Arkansas City was made in 1854 by James A. Smith and others from Keokuk Township, Iowa. In 1856, John Saylor and others organized a post office here. The town started as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and grew rapidly when it became known for its crop production and local water supply. In 1888, the railroad arrived in Arkansas City with settlers from Missouri who named it after their home state of Missouri. The town quickly grew into a busy regional center for transportation and commerce until a series of natural disasters struck the area in the 1990s: floods that destroyed much of downtown business district; several tornadoes that damagingly touched down near town; and a severe drought that caused crop failures throughout rural Johnson County. However, some notable business entities that still remain today include The Gentry-Haley Hotel (now known as Quality Inn), First Baptist Church (founded in 1907), and Midway Mall (opened in 1987). In recent years many small businesses have closed within Arkansas City due to lack of patronage or competition from larger competitors such as Wichita's Walmart or Lenexa's KMart just outside of town limits. In 1960s ARKANSAS CITY WAS A TOP 10 POPULATION CENTER IN KANSAS WITH OVER 100 BUSINESSES.
