Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the Arkansas River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 97,813. The city is most famous for its petroleum refinery and natural gas processing plants, which are among the largest in the world. The area around Arkansas City was first settled by pioneers in 1854. The first store in Arkansas City opened in 1855 and was run by John Greenough and his wife Sarah Gates Greenough. In 1861, when Union General George Buell's army invaded Kansas Territory, he ordered Colonel Jesse James to move his cattle herd from Dodge City to what is now Arkansas City because he felt that Dodge City would become Confederate territory if they were allowed to stay within the Union lines. James relocated his herd and began production at his new ranch at Poteautown after becoming president of the company that developed it – Wichita & Gulf Railroad Company – which later became Wichita Pipeline Corporation. The first factory built in town was a sawmill operated by David Fenton on White Oak Creek; it was destroyed by a flood in 1881 but rebuilt as an oil refinery using local sandstone quarries near present-day downtown Arkansas City. The refinery produced Nearly 1 million barrels of oil per day until it closed down due to environmental problems in 1970s; however, parts of it still stand today as part of United States Natural Gas Development Authority's (UNDGA) Heritage Properties business district along Main Street between Third Avenue and Sixth Avenue NW Following World War II, production shifted from refining fuels into plastic products such as telephones and children's toys before ceasing operations altogether during the late 1960s due to advances in technology; however some remnants survive today including an early 20th century ghost town called "Mormon Hill" southeast of downtown that once housed a large cotton gin/textile mill complex known as "Arkansas Mill". In recent years there has been significant development taking place around town including several new professional sports stadiums: FirstEnergy Stadium (formerly Arrowhead Stadium), Blue Diamond Energy Stadium (formerly Phillips 66 Field), US Cellular Park (formerly Kauffman Stadium) and Saturday night home games for both major league teams Kansas CITY Royals baseball team and St Louis Cardinals baseball team have all been played at FirstEnergy Stadium since 2006 while Saturday night home games for both major league teams Tulsa Roughnecks football team have also been played there since 2007 with plans to bring soccer back to Saturday night live events beginning 2020.. Work continues on renovation/updates for other municipal buildings located adjacent to FirstEnergy stadium such as Waterfront Park which will include a new water infrastructure system beneath ground allowing for increased efficiency with less impact on environment
