Arkansas City, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Overland Park, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Arkansas City was made by settlers from Illinois in 1837. A post office called Arkansas City was established in 1839 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, a group of men led by Sidney Fenton platted what is now Arkansas City on the east side of the Canadian River. They named their town after General John Custer who had been killed that year during the American Civil War. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was founded and rapidly grew with the arrival of railroad passengers and farmers seeking to establish themselves around the new railway junction. In 1890, an act were passed authorizing the erection of a general store and built one near present day US-40 and US-169 across from Lock Haven Cemetery where major league baseball games are played today. The early days were hectic for those living near US- 169 but things calmed down after construction began on the Shawnee Freeway which linked Wichita with Topeka and other cities through Shawnee County. It was founded by General George Armstrong Custer and his army during the American Civil War, and became a city after it was given federal recognition in 1865. The city is named for General Custer's older brother-in-law, Major John A. Nicoll. The first settlers to Arkansas City were Indian traders who had been living there since 1854. This community grew slowly until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Kansas and destroyed most of the town (except for a few buildings that were saved). In 1863, General Custer's army moved through Arkansas City on their way to fight in the Wars for Independence. In 1865, Congress passed the Act which gave Arkansas City municipal status; this act made it an incorporated municipality with its own government separate from that of Topeka, Kan., giving it more autonomy than other towns in Kansas at that time. The population of Arkansas City increased rapidly due to this change in government; by 1870 it had reached 100 residents and by 1881 had reached 250 residents. During World War II, as part of President Harry S Truman'sWar Measures Authorityprograms (), Arkansas City served as one of two military training centers for Army Air Forces soldiers stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas (). After the war ended in 1945, many veterans returned to town and began rebuilding what was left ofArkansas City following World War II devastation caused by bombings raids conducted by Japanese forces during the PACIFIC WAR (). Many local businesses were rebuilt including a new bank building constructed in 1949–50 (), along with several large homes built between 1951 and 1955 ().
