Arkansas City, Kansas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is served by the Arkansas City Municipal Airport and by Lawrence County sheriff's office. The first permanent settler in what is now Arkansas City was Jesse Benton in 1854. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of the Arkansas River which they named Bentonville after him. In 1855, James Hargrave arrived from England and founded an agricultural village near present-day Overbrook on the White River near present day Wichita. Hargrave named his new settlement "Arkansas City" after himself and his wife Sarah (née McCulloch). The first post office for Arkansas City was established on November 15, 1857, but it did not open until February 12, 1861 due to low population levels at that time. During World War I, local merchants donated materials needed for military camps set up along the border of Kansas and Oklahoma; these camps were called Camp Butler because of General Winfield Scott's Butler Expedition which crossed into Kansas in 1867 to investigate Indian resistance to white rule over their reservations. In 1920, when Lawrence County was created from portions of Douglas County, Arkansas City became one of its villages within that county. On October 1st 1921, all other villages within Lawrence County were merged into one municipality with a unicameral government under the name "ArkansasCity Municipal Authority". The authority continued to operate as an independent municipality until March 14th 1984 when it merged withLawrenceCounty Sheriff's Office to form one entity which continues today as LawrenceSheriff's Office

However, there have been some recent efforts by local officials to revive downtown areas of the city and bring back some of its former glory.
