Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,577 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Haskell County and the second-most populous city of any county in Kansas. The first settlement in what is now Arkansas City was made by Nicholas Garriott and his brother John Garriott on December 12, 1827. They named their new town after General Andrew Jackson's Creek victory over British forces at Battle of Hockessin on November 24, 1814. The town site was located near present day Junction City on the Union Pacific Railroad. Although there were other settlements established early in Arkansas City's history, it became an important commercial center due to its location on the railroad and its access to water supplies from two creeks which flowed through the town. The post office called Arkansas City "New Ark" until 1885 when it changed to "Arkansas City". Arkadelphia had become an important rail junction with connections to Topeka and Wichita before being abandoned for economic reasons during the late 1800s as well as during World War I because of potential military use ofthe area; however, post office officials continued to call both towns "Arkadelphia". In 1929, Jefferson Barracks (now Fort Riley) was built adjacent to what is now downtown Arkansas City and ZIP code 67501 became the official postal code for that part of Haskell County. In 1938, a tornado killed twenty-one people and injured seventy-five people near downtown ArkansasCity; this event helped spur development around that area including several small shopping malls which opened up around that time. As more residents moved into central ArkansasCity - especially after Interstate 40 was built nearby - social services began to be provided outlying areas such as Park Hill which served as a bedroom community for central ARKCSity residents until annexation by Wichita annexed in 1990 resulted in increased traffic congestion within those boundaries which led to calls for rezoning of Park Hill into a commuter suburb known today simply as "ArkansasCity".[1][2] However majorities within both local governments favored retaining their central business district character while annexing additional neighborhoods surrounding it resulting in revocation of annexation status by Wichita following protests by some citizens who felt they had been left unfairly uncompensated[3]. In 2002 voters approved creating an urban renewal district surrounding downtown called Central Arkansas Community Development Authority (CACDA). This action allowed businesses not owned or operated by CACDA (primarily apartments) to be rezoned into residential areas without giving them market rate property values so long as they maintained certain infrastructure such as parking lots and significant pedestrian flow.[4] That same year also saw construction begin on what will become one of ARKCSity's primary landmarks: University Boulevard/Jefferson Barracks Drive

Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in eastern Kansas, United States. The population was 9,633 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Arkansas City was founded in 1854 as the community of Peoria by businessmen and farmers from Illinois. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Arkansas River and its position as a railway junction. In 1881, it became the capital of Kaw County and changed its name to Arkansas City after President James K. Polk signed an act making that happen. The city experienced some growth during World War II, when millions of dollars were invested in manufacturing munitions in nearby Wichita. However, recent economic downturns have hit Arkansas City hard, with unemployment rates exceeding 20%. The history of Arkansas City goes back to 1854 when businessman and farmer Josiah Gregg established the first town in what is now Wichita County, Kansas Territory. He named his new settlement Peoria after his hometown in Illinois (Peoria had been renamed "Davenport" earlier that year). Gregg's business partner William Bradford landed at Hutchinson Landing on the Arkansa River on July 3, 1830 while exploring this region for new land grants—the first European Americans to ever set foot hereabouts. They founded what would become Wichita Falls on August 14th of that year; however their enterprise failed due to lack of water supplies and other difficulties encountered during their exploratory journey westward into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). In December 1881, Kaw County was created from part of Shawnee County following territorialsplitting within Oklahoma Territory As part of this process, Arkansas City became the capital of Kaw County which spanned much territory including present-day Wichita and Topeka counties as well as Brush Prairie District located east-central Kansas near Emporia Junction Federal Reserve Bankruptcy court complex on Main Street between Second Avenue South & Third Avenue North served as bankruptcy court until 1984 when it moved to Topeka where it remains today pending disposition by US Supreme Court under case number 5: Perry v Saline Valley Water District et al., 910 U S 1 (2011).
