The Andover Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club has been an important part of the rifle and pistol communities in Andover, Kansas for over a century. In 1912, the Andover Rifle and Pistol Club became the first NRA affiliate in Kansas. The club participated in NRA meetings and tournaments from then until 1934. In 1934, NRA Executive Vice President Emil Jorgensen chaired a meeting to consider adopting a new national program for gun safety that would include NRA members as well as other interested organizations. That year, the NRA passed its landmark National Firearms Act which provided regulation of handguns and rifles with mandatory serial numbers. Since 1934, the Andover Rifle and Pistol Club has played an instrumental role in keeping our community safe by providing shooting instruction, storage, and safety equipment to members. In addition to their programming at local level, the club also participates regularly in state competitions such as the State Games or Open Meetings where they have won many awards over time including 2 gold medals at Stroudsburg’s Centennial Exposition (1928) & 3 silver medals at Wichita’s Independence exposition (1978).

The first people to live in Andover were farmers who came from Illinois in the 1840s. They built their homes near present-day Andover on land they had acquired from the Kansas Territory government. In 1854, a post office was founded in Andover and mail was delivered by wagon to what is now Topeka. A hotel and store were built in 1857; both are gone today but their foundations remain as part of the town square. In 1865, Andover became a school district with schools located all over Sedgwick County. The first school building was erected on Main Street just west of present-day Monticello Elementary School; it served until 1907 when a new building was constructed on Fourth Street between Westminster and Haskell avenues. In 1927, Andover High School moved from its original location at First National Banknorthwest corner Second Avenue and Central Boulevard to its current site across South Park Boulevard from Northside Elementary School (now known as Northside Middle School). Andover has experienced prosperity since World War II when industry began to grow along with population growth; however, recent years have seen some decline due to economic difficulties within the city limits alone which have led Toomer's Corner grocery store closure in 2009 and an unemployment rate above 20%. However, local businesses continue to thrive thanks to several community-based organizations including: "The Rotary Club", " Kiwanis Club", "American Legion Post #5" and "Andovers United Methodist Church". 2nd Ward Alderman John Herrin announced plans for a $10 million dollar redevelopment of downtown that would include housing for low-income residents as well as job training facilities for Atchison County Sheriff's Department deputies--a move that gained large support within the community including Mayor Tom Taylor who characterized it as "a major step forward" while also pledging his support for future projects staged through 2nd Ward Alderman Herb Lassen should such funding become available following an election later this year
