Andover, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka-Aldine metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1869 by John Andover and his wife Lucy. Andover first appeared on maps as "Andowers", but was changed to its current name in 1892 when it became a part of Topeka. In 1869, young John Andover left his home near Lawrence, KS for what he thought would be a more peaceful and prosperous life in what he believed to be an antique society center called Andovershire (laterKansas City). He arrived with only $10 in his pocket and started a small store on Main Street with the help of some friends. A year later, he married Lucy Ewing and they opened another store on Fourth Street which they continued to run until their deaths in 1923 and 1957 respectively. In 1922, Andovershire became one of the towns that made up Shawnee County when it was created from Douglas County. The community had begun to grow rapidly since becoming one of Topeka's many new communities during the early years of the 20th century due to its location close to key businesses such as oil refineries and agricultural processing plants located within easy access along I-80/I-435 corridors; this proximity also led Toopersville (now Anadarko) Potatoes & Processors Company to establish itself as one of Shawnee County's leading producers of potatoes before Interstate 70 replaced freight transportation routes linking these centers about two miles away from downtown Andoversville – an event that helped stimulate further growth within the village during this period .
