Andover is named after General Andrew Jackson Andros, who served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was laid out by commissioners from Topeka on January 5, 1879. The first post office opened in Andover on February 2, 1879. The name of the original town site is still used today for street names such as Third Street and Main Street.
