In 1861, Andover, Kansas was the home of one of the first optical instruments in the United States. The instrument was a reflecting mirror named "The Reflector." It was used by Professor John H. Park to measure light waves and make scientific statements about light. This instrument is still in use today and can be found at the University of Kansas Museum of History and Art. In 1875, Dr. Charles P. Schiltz developed an improved version of The Reflector that could be used indoors. He called it the "Schiltz reflector." This reflector is still in use today at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. In 1903, Dr. Julius Karger created an illuminated microscope that could be used without a mirror or eyepiece by shining sunlight through a small hole in its front panel into a dark sample under magnification. This microscope is still being used today at many universities around the world including Harvard University and Yale University

Andover, Kansas is a town in the Kaw Valley area of Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlement in Andover was made on December 5, 1859 by Jacob and Emeline Cook from Elk City, Kansas. Andover's incorporation as a town occurred on July 14, 1903. Andover is named for Dr. George Fenton Andover (1811-1885), an American doctor and professor at the University of Edinburgh who served as its first president and one of its trustees from 1872 to 1885. The town site was surveyed in 1867 by Arent Calkins under the name "Creek". The village of Andover was platted on November 15, 1870 by Wm. Hightower under the name "Andover." The new village had a population of 218 when it became a city on January 1, 1907. On October 2, 1911 Kansans voted to add Andover to their state constitution as a third congressional district around Wichita Falls; this vote failed two weeks later due to lack of signaturesrequired for that type of annexation. In 1912–13 business interests interested in building an electric power plant near Wichita Falls bought land northeast of present-day Andover for $1 million dollars which they planned to build using profits from selling electricity generated by their power plant to other towns within the state and out into Interstate 70 bordering Oklahoma Territory

Andover, Kansas is a small town in US state of Kansas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in Wichita County. Andover was founded in 1872 by John Andover and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Andover. The town had a peak population of 2,503 people in 1950 but has since declined to 1,811 people as of 2010. Andover is one of the oldest towns in Wichita County and first settled by English settlers around 1790-1800 who came to this area from Northumberland County in England. In 1872 Andover's founders were John Andover and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Andover, both natives of Massachusetts Bay Colony (now Nova Scotia). In 1850 the population of Wichita County was only 581; however within 10 years it had increased to over 2,500 residents due to waves of immigrants arriving here during the 1850s following the American Civil War. The growth of this small community may have been due to its location on the Republican River which provided easy access for goods transported downriver from nearby Fort Dodge and Lawrence City. Additionally, because Ofver lacked any type of local government until after 1890 when it formed part of Wichita Township, there was little pressure from neighboring municipalities to increase their populations or build new highways through their midst – something that would soon become an issue with other larger towns such as Topeka and Leavenworth which saw rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks largely to new railroad construction throughout central Kansas. However even though earlytowners did not feel pressure from surrounding municipalities they did experience some competition - most notably from Topeka which became much more powerful thanks to its location on the Arkansas River floodplain and its ability to draw merchants and workers away from smaller towns along the river valley. As time passed Topeka's advantages grew increasingly irrelevant as other communities quickly outgrew them: by 1920 topeka had overtaken Andovers political power and ceased being an important commercial center while smaller villages like Mechanicsburg began developing into larger cities characterized by large public works projects such as waterworks (the first municipally owned water system in America) or streetcar lines connecting them with larger cities like Topeka or Leavenworth (laterKansas City). WhileTopekas decline can be attributed partially theretopeoples move away rather than Audakers annexation – Topeka experienced significant crime rates percentagewise decrease between 1880-1920 while Andovers remained relatively unchanged – overallAndovers decline can be traced backto shopkeepers moving away during prohibition era when liquor sales were tightly regulated
Andover was founded in 1854 by Seth Mansell and is the oldest continuously populated city in Kansas.
