The first permanent residents in Andover were farmers who arrived in 1867 from Missouri. Andover's location made it an ideal spot to grow crops and provide goods for the surrounding communities. The first store opened in 1870, and by 1915 the town had a prayer meeting house, library, post office, doctor's office, bank and telephone service. In 1925, the state Highway Patrol set up shop on Main Street in Andover to help keep traffic moving during prohibition times. In 1948, when Interstate 30 became available south of AndOVER along with other new highways statewide, Andover saw its first real growth as people began commuting to work in Topeka or Wichita down the road. Businesses mushroomed as people began looking for an Escape from Topeka or Wichita life style options while still being close to family and friends. Today there are over 20 businesses operating within walking distance of each other including several banks and restaurants as well as a few strip malls complete with stores such as Sears (now Macy's), JCPenney & Co., AutoZone/Mallard Chevrolet dealership etc.). Homespun prosperity has continued through today due to tight budgets throughout most years; despite this economic volatility some businesses have managed to stay open even when faced with difficult competition from more expensive rivals across the street or greater distances away like outlet malls or department stores which often offer larger salaries and benefits than their home country counterparts ( e.g., Sears Holdings announced plans last year to move out of Kansas City after 36 years). Despite these challenges many people continue living here permanently or semi-permanently because they believe that this community offers unacceptable amenities found closer unto metropolitan areas like Topeka or Wichita without sacrificing quality personal service offered by its citizens hereabouts ( e.g., excellent schools; friendly neighbors; convenient transportation). Andover experienced significant growth following World War II when it became home to various military bases and defense contractor facilities such as Shaw Air Force Base. However, recent years have seen a decrease in population due to changes within the local economy and job losses among local businesses since 2013 with the closing of two major military installations (McChord Army Corps Base - MO and Fort Riley - KS). Today, Andover retains its smalltown feel while still providing access to many cultural attractions including downtown shopping streets that are lined with locally owned businesses; an annual farmers' market; hiking & biking trails; golf courses; several libraries; stately homes; waterfalls; and a variety of restaurants including IHOP & KFC.
