Andover is located on the south bank of the Missouri River, about 20 miles (30 km) east of Topeka and 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Wichita. The first white settlers in Andover arrived in 1854 from Independence, Missouri. They built a log cabin and raised crops until 1857 when they moved to a gristmill on the Arkansas River where they became millers and traders for three years before moving to their present location on land grant from Governor James W. Hays. In 1865, local businessman John Dickson purchased 640 acres (240 ha) near Andover from Hays and began developing it into what is now known as Andover Township. In 1870, he donated an additional 248 acres (128 ha), which became known as "Dickson Park." Industry quickly followed Dickson's donation - lumberyards were established soon after; gas lighting came online in 1895; railroad service was available in 1897; and oil wells were drilled starting in 1898. The township developed strong agricultural roots - corn fields became major crops; dairy operations grew large enough to be self-sufficient; apples were brought overland from neighboring Harmony Township for processing into cider or preserves; potatoes were grown near by for market purposes; eggs were produced during cold weather months when there was no other way to produce them commercially.
