It is one of two towns in Sedgwick County and it is also part of the Hutchinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The other town is Lenexa. Andover was founded by farmers who came from England in 1857. In 1868, the town was renamed Andover after General George Armstrong Custer who had been killed in battle that year. The first store opened in 1870 and by 1880 there were twelve stores in the town. After World War II, Andover became a major producer of corn and soybeans for local farms and food processors. Cotton production died out after World War II but soybean production has continued to grow through agriculture subsidies and artificial fertilizers The original homesteads on land that now makes up much of Andover were built by James Fenton and his family between 1857-1859 when he bought 4 acres (1 km²). He named it "Fenton's Hill" after himself The first school in Andover was called Academy School which started operation on February 17, 1860 under the name Ofallon Academy (). A later addition to this school building was an auditorium which served as a movie theater until 1969 when it burned down One of the most famous people to attend this school was President Ulysses S Grant who attended Fornonius High School where he played football for three years before going on to study law at Harvard University . When Grant took office as president in 1869 he helped open up Kansas Territory to white settlers so he could be elected governor instead of via election . This event led to some jokes about him being "Grant America". In 1902, another high school called Onalaska opened up just east of present day Andover with similar facilities including an auditorium which still serves as a performing arts center today
