In 1895 FirstEnergy Stadium began play hosting games for the Kansas Jayhawks football team along with other college sports including basketball (then known as 'Atchison Field House'), baseball ( then known as 'New Haven Field House'), ice hockey (then known as 'Fenway Park'), soccer ('Old Armory') Gaelic games ('Pumpkin Hill')and wrestling (then known as 'Hutchinson Gym'). After 25 years of hosting collegiate athletics teams for over 1 million students annually, FirstEnergy Stadium closed its doors permanently on January 13th 2009 due to damage caused during an Iowa Hawkeyes homecoming game that ended up being one of college football's more infamous moments according to ESPN Magazine: "On September 8th 1999 - almost 25 years after KU beat Iowan 73-0 at FirstEnergy Stadium - university officials announced that due to concerns about potential fire risks associated with stadium operations they had decided not to renew their lease." After being incorporated as a village, Andover began to grow rapidly due to its location near I-435 and Highway 66; its proximity to agricultural production; and its excellent water resources which made it possible for villagers to build large homes without having to drain land or fight with landowners for access to water supplies. In addition, local businesses such as grocery stores and department stores helped Tooperville become known as an important center for shopping west of Wichita Falls while remaining quiet about their eastern neighbor's growth. In 2000, following years of discussion among village leaders and members of The Kansas Legislature regarding concerns over declining sales tax revenue caused by changing economic conditions within Johnson County overall(), Mayor Rick Henson declared That Town closed effective February 15th 2001 after more than 20 years operating under one name! This closure left behind memories both good (like when we hosted our annual golf tournament at Noons Creek Golf Course) AND bad (like all those times we couldn't get anyone from Topeka or Wichita Falls show up). As stated by Village Manager Rick Henson" closing wasn't easy but it's something we have cometo terms with...It really sucks because we've done so much together". On December 12th 2009 voters elected new leadership including MayorRick Henson himself who announced plans for redevelopment & fundraising activities associated with reopening & expanding services available within Town Hall
