Andover, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Andover is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Andover was John Wilson who arrived in 1854. Andover was platted on November 20, 1857 by J.P. Leavenworth and A.T. McClintock under the name of "Andover-on-the-Hill". It became an incorporated village on January 1, 1860 under the name of "Andover". A post office called Andover was established in 1861, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. As a result of its small size, Andover had few public works or services provided through government entities such as schools or fire departments early on; these were gradually added over time as resources became available. In 1936, Census Tract No 113 (now Ward 2) within Sedgwick County was annexed to Andover from Hutchinson County; this annexation made it one of two towns within Sedgwick County that did not require vote by popular election for change from their existing villages to incorporation status; the other being Topeka (the county seat). In 1938, when Wichita Falls separated from Sedgwick County and formed its own county within Texas, Andover reverted back to its original village form with a population of 321 residents according to the 1940 census count but increased to 476 six years later following purchase of land adjoining Wichita Falls' city limits by local businessmen Edwin Cramer and Harry Sorensen – Atool's Grocery store being one such purchase along with additions including a movie theater and restaurant/barber shop located adjacent to Main Street which would become known as Soopers'.
