Captain Andover named the town after himself, hoping to create a community that would be separate from the surrounding Indian Territory. In 1861, Andover became a county seat of Floyd County, Kansas. The townsite at Andover was first farmed by farmers who brought over their crop monies from Illinois and other eastern states in wagons or on horseback. Because there were no railways then, goods passed through either Floyd County or Topeka before they reached the small townsite at Andover. There were also occasional boatloads of settlers coming downriver to prospect for oil and natural gas deposits which would later become part of Wichita County. In 1875, Major General George Armstrong Custer's force arrived in western Kansas and spent two weeks visiting local towns before moving on to Fort Hays where they began preparations for their march into Dakota Territory which had been claimed by treaty with Sioux Indians. On July 14th of that year, the main body of Custer's troop failed to arrive at Fort Hays as expected and instead moved northeastward into Indian Territory reaching Butte on August 20th though some elements did make it back to civilization alive due to rough travel conditions at that time. As more people immigrated westward during the late 1800s and early 1900s many businesses opened up around Andover including a flour mill built in 1907 followed by several grocery stores when Interstate 80 started being built east-west in this area. The population peaked around 1925 with over 10% of residents working inside the city limits while most residents still lived outside town until 1955 when Interstate 80 split off from US Highway 60 just north of town creating its own transportation artery with less need for roads within town limits making it difficult for businesses near I-80 to thrive withoutmoving outwards again among other changes during that timeperiod such as housing becoming much more affordable following World War II while jobs outside Ofver continued unchanged even as prices for basic necessities rose throughout much of this period despite overall economic decline throughout much OFver during those years but has since stabilized
Andover, Kansas was founded in 1867 by Levi Leavitt and his family. The town celebrated its centennial in 1967. The Leavitts were the first people to settle in Andover. They farm land on the east side of town and built a house on the west side in 1867.
