The first people to live in Andover were the Kansa Indians who lived on the banks of the Arkansas River. They left around 1812 and moved to what is now Topeka. Andover was originally called Hennepin. In 1854, James Cady bought land here and named it Andover after his brother-in-law, George Hennepin. Andover was platted in 1857 by Wm. Ewing and Cyrus Porter as a village of fifteen homes with a total population of seventy-six people. On July 7, 1861, it became a town when one hundred residents voted to establish it as such by popular vote over objections from nearby Topeka. The first post office was established in Andover on October 15, 1861; its name was changed to Topeka on January 12th of 1862 (after becoming an adjacent city). The first school in Andover was built in 1865; it became the first public school in Butler County when it opened at 214 Neches Ave., also known as Broadway School House #1A. A new high school building (now Point High School)was completed for Andover on September 3rd 1903 and served as its primary campus until 2002 when Eastman Community Schools took over operations there from Point High School
