West Des Moines is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. In 1886, Wabash College opened its doors in what is now West Des Moines and became one of America's first coeducational colleges. Some early residents of WestDesMoines were: Wm Brandsbury (founder of Kodak), George Stephenson (the inventor who designed Waterloo Bridge), Judge David Herndon (a pioneer settler) and his wife Martha Mason Herndon (later Mrs. Abraham Lincoln). They also constructed Herndon House which stands today as a national historic landmark and still remains privately owned. Mr. Brandsbury donated land for nearby Drake University which was founded in1893; it has since become one of America's most respected universities with over 100,000 students enrolled across six campuses in Iowa City; education has always been a major factor driving economic development within West Des Moines proper as well as throughout Polk County – creating jobs for locals and supporting local businesses! In 1998, Weston/Kingman Township merged into West Des Moines through annexation - making it one municipality form five separate townships that had formed aroundwest des moines during 1898 when western des moines Township separated from Kingman Township – making it possible for these small townships to annexed larger jurisdictions without any conflict or lawsuits! This allowed more efficient planning and management within each municipality while continuing westdesmoines' commitment to be an open community where everyone can enjoy equal access regardless of socioeconomic status or background! Today there are over 50 businesses operating inside our boundaries including several large tech companies! At that time, it had a population of just under 50 people; but within two years it had added over 100 more residents and became one of Iowa's largest cities with an estimated metropolitan area size exceeding 2 million people by 1908. The success of Polk County businesses led to development along I-35W which quickly madeWestDesMoines one of Americas top ten largest metropolitan areas by 1990 according to Census 2000 data . As recently as 2010 however some residents continue protest against high traffic levels caused by I-35W construction projects nearby
