In 1872, General Order No. 1 made West Des Moines an official city and placed it under jurisdiction of Grimes County courthouse which had been established in 1859 for that purpose. West Des Moines, Iowa is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 16,735 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and home to the University of Iowa. The first permanent settlement in what is now West Des Moines was made on May 10, 1854 by James Wickersham and his brother-in-law, Caleb Ewing. Wickersham named the area "Des Moines." A post office called West Des Moines was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1907. On February 14, 1868, four men from Dubuque arrived at the Union Pacific Railroad Depot on Main Street near High School Square and begun construction of a small town called Cedar Rapids. The name Cedar Rapids was chosen because of its resemblance to cedar trees which were then being grown along the riverbanks nearby. The town charter was issued on March 15 and it became known as Cedar Rapids. The first store opened in Cedar Rapids on October 3rd, 1868 by Simeon Hixon Jr., who also founded the first school there - Maplewood Academy (now Millsaps College). In 1870–71 Methodist missionaries began providing religious education for Native Americans living near Cedar Rapids; this led to the establishment of Missionary Baptist Church #1 (now First Presbyterian) in 1870 and Methodist Church #2 (later Hope Lutheran) in 1872. In 1880 Captain John Coyle built a large lumberyard/shipbuilding yard just south of downtown Cedar Rapids which became one of largest employers in town with over 1,000 workers during its heyday including among others Jens Jensen (1860-1930), David Thompson (1862-1947), George Burtz (1863-1937), Alanson Pillsbury (1865-1920) and Forrest Guthrie (1869-1945). Following World War I Strong's textile mill closed down due to lack of demand nationally; however local entrepreneurs resurrected it as a yarn plant operating under various names until it closed again in 1966 when Iowa State University bought it for $1 million purpose – later renamed Ames Research Laboratory – becoming one of ISU's most iconic buildings. With growing research interests at ISU throughout the 1970s & 1980s Ames lost some prominence but has since regained some notoriety as an epicenter for computer science research especially through "Ivy League" programs such as those offered by Department Cavaillé UltraLabs at ISU’s Jacobs School Of Engineering & Applied Sciences since 2007; see http://www2.iuowa.edu/~jacobs/pages/history_of_west_des_moses/.
