The first mayor was George Wiggs. In 1857, John Atherton built what is now Park Street Baptist Church in downtown; it would be his final church building until he donated it to the city in 1907. On November 15, 1868 – one week before Iowa Statehood – citizens voting on whether to secede from Illinois approved a resolution designating West Des Moines as their capital; this action served as the beginning of what would become known as "Iowa's Gem". On December 12th same year Apache Indians attacked an unarmed wagon train traveling through WestDesMoines en route to Sioux City under orders from General Black Cloud; only three people were killed but much damage was done including destruction to bridges and fences along Interstate 80 which caused $25 million in damages over twenty years. This event helped spur development around Cedar Rapids with cattle drives bringing goods back upriver while other businesses sprang up to take advantage of Indian trade patterns during this time period such as breweries and stores catering to both white settlers and Native Americans alike
