As a result, only about 1,000 people remained in West Des Moines by 1907 when it merged with neighboring city Iowa City. During its history, West Des Moines has been home to several important institutions including Western Reserve University (now Cleveland State University), Drake University and Methodist Hospital. In 1907, West Des Moines became one of six cities in Iowa that became legally bound by state law to provide public services such as education and firefighting despite being located outside of the state’s capital city –Iowa City! This landmark decision helped make West Des Moines an increasingly popular destination for businesses and residents alike who desired easier access to quality government services while still remaining within walking distance of their homes or workplaces.
