West Des Moines, Iowa (also known as West Des Moines, IA) is a city in Iowa and the county seat of Polk County. The population was 96,971 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Iowa after Cedar Rapids. The city is located on the Des Moines River and is bordered by Polk County on the north, Dodge County on the east, Winneshiek County on the south and Harrison County to the west. The area that became West Des Moines was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Polk County in 1824. A post office called "Iowa City" was established in 1829, but it was discontinued due to its distance from other settlements. In 1838, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort near present-day WestDes Moines and named it after himself. The town began growth quickly, becoming an important military base during the American Civil War because of its ability to supply food for troops stationed in neighboring states. In 1847, landowner James Kincaid donated 1 mile (1 km) of his land northwest of present-day downtown to build a public square known as Kincaid Square. On July 20th of that year, residents of Ames voted to incorporate as a city under authority of a mayor and council system similar to those used in other U.S. cities at this time; this first step towards suburbanization would later lead to rapid development within downtownwest des moines over time In 1861 when Iowa State College opened its doors following reconstruction efforts following Ford's Expedition crash which killed 50 people near Council Bluffs , many students from west des moines came eastward for college education
