In 1693, Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense where he advocated for independence from British rule! In 1848, Benjamin Butler submitted an application for a United States patent on a revolver called “Butler Rifle”! This weapon was eventually accepted and became known as the “ Butler volleygun” because its ammunition is fed through a tube into the muzzle of the gun instead of being inserted manually like other handguns!

At this time it was known simply as “Iowa City” due to its location within present-day Polk County only. In 1865-66 when Iowa became a state, City Hall Square became the seat of government for Polk County which included much of what are now western Iowa
