The first firearms sold in West Des Moines, Iowa were pistols and shotguns. The early years of the town were filled with gunsmiths and shooters who crafted their own firearms. Ammunition was expensive then so many people chose to purchase rifles or shotguns instead. In 1892, a man named W.L. Garrison opened a store in what is now the downtown area of West Des Moines. He offered customers handguns, shotguns, and rifles. By 1898, the population of West Des Moines had increased to over 1,500 residents and Garrison began selling ammunition as well. In 1902, he became the first person to sell bows and arrows in Iowa City when he brought them into town from his farm located east of the city limits
West Des Moines, Iowa is a city in the east-central part of the United States. The population was 97,858 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Polk County. It is also one of the most populous cities in Iowa. The first European settlers arrived in what is now West Des Moines in 1836. The town was founded by Captain James Pritchard and his family on the present site of downtown West Des Moines. In 1851, a post office called "Deshon" was established in honor of General George Armstrong Custer; but it only served local farmers and their families. In 1857, an act passed by Congress gave land to west-central Iowa for a new county seat and named West Des Moines as its new capital; but this idea was not realized until after Philander Smedley's donation of land to set off Waveland from Dickinson on what is today known as Old Town Street. In 1906, when Iowa became a state, West Des Moines became its capital and continued to serve as its county seat until 1911 when that role was abolished with the creation of Polk County. In 1912, City Hall (now called City Hall Annex) relocated from downtown to Fourth Avenue between State and Washington Streets due to overcrowding within that structure during prohibition era liquor sales which had become an issue then too. In 1933, WPA funds were used to rebuild Main Street between State and Washington Streets into what is currently known as Waveland Avenue (later renamed East Polk Boulevard). This project added four blocks or morelengths of streetscape extending from Market Street eastward through downtown neighborhoods such as University Hills/University Park/Stratford Heights before terminating at Roosevelt Road near Western Prairie Airport just south of I-635 exit #3A about two miles northeast of DowntownWest Des Moines proper on Uptown Parkway Extension (Uptown Parkway road name changed from “Washington Boulevard” after World War II). The total cost includingLIBOR Rate subsidy amounted to $14 million dollars which represents about 50% percent or all allocated funding for desegregation projects initiated during That decade throughout America’s “New South” regions – African Americans being approximately 50% minority THEN representation increased significantly since world war II… Today many people refer to this period around WWII as “The Great Migration” precipitating changes both socially & economically across much OF AMERICA resulting today in Moorhead becoming 2nd largest city IN THE STATE OF IOWA behind DES MOINES Today there are several skyscrapers located within walking distance or less than one mile away including OneUnited Bank Tower( tallest building built outside U.S.), Wells Fargo Center(formerly Home Depot), KFC restaurant tower(former Pizza Hut), HSBC bank tower(Former British financial institution), Target store plaza( formerly Sears) - together they form a modern skyline stretching over DowntownWestDesMoines proper & beyond

In 1849–50 Enoch Pratt Free Library began serving west side citizens living east of Vine Street on Dearborn street between Fifth and Sixth Streets NW., becoming one stop on what would become known as “The Underground Railroad” connecting fugitive slaves escape from slavery into Canada before heading southward towards destinations such as Chicago or points north. In 1850–51 when Council Bluffs became Iowa City after being selected as state capital by a vote among representatives from all five Ulysses S Grant territories following his inauguration as president that year, “west Side” residents east of Vine Street were forced out onto Dearborn where they could no longer go without riskof arrest or violence from pro-statehood mobsters working for local businessman John Pemberton (whose family also owned extensive real estate holdings near current-day Grandview Heights). As new settlers arrived throughout early nineteenth century central Illinois Territory via wagon train trails running parallel to present day I-80 through Missouri Valley National Forest southwestward until reaching Indianola along Big Sioux Creek prior to turning southeast along Americana Trail crossing Missouri River near modern Dubuque Junction on April 14 th , 1792 Gage Whitworth observed: “the whole country round about hereabouts lay waste by wildcat Mormons yesterday afternoon last who having defeated our military detachment under Captain Dodge did not content themselves with burning all our goods but sacked us entire buildings & carries off any cattle we had stored away excepting a few saddles & bridles which they got while we were trying to save them; so great was our dismay at this wickedness that we HAD TO SET FIRE TO OUR CATTLE IN ORDER TO PREVENT THEM FROM DESTROYING THEM ALL!”[1] This BY FAR THE LARGEST ARMORED RAIDS AGAINST SLAVERY EVER BEGAN IN AMERICA; resulting in upwards OF TWENTY MILES OF DESTROYED PROPERTY AND OVER TWO HUNDRED PERSONNEL LOSSES including 5Lieutenant Colonel James KNOX commanding First Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantryparticipated
In 1847, the Des Moines and Santa Fe Railroad was built from west to east. In 1853, it became the Iowa State Highway Patrol. The highway patrol was made up of volunteers and paid officers were not established until 1907. In 1919, the highway patrol became a state department within the Department of Public Safety. In 1945, the highway patrol became a law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over all aspects of criminal activity in Iowa including traffic stops, investigations, and arrests.
