A new depot was built on Fourth Street east of Center Avenue in 1907 which became the town's primary cultural and social hub until it too burned down in 2006. In 1899, citizens voted to move the county seat from Fayetteville to West Des Moines because they felt that Fayetteville had become an overcrowded training center for officers necessary for local government functions such as constabulary duty while located adjacent to Fauquier College (now part of University Of Iowa). The following year saw construction begin on what would eventually be called "The Main" – a new courthouse designed by noted American architect John Leland Custis Beall that would serve as both business space and a civic center for WestDesMoines throughout its history. In 1911–12, local developer Hapgood & Sons began extensive renovations to downtown including increasing pedestrian access through addition of sidewalks along First Street between Capitol Drive and Cherokee Ave., creating what would eventually become one of DowntownWestDesMoines' most successful eras economy-wise with significant job growth across various sectors Following World War II when demand for manufactured goods increased due to increased production during wartime Production Act restrictions were placed upon United States industries which required companies to provide jobs for Americans regardless their location This led to significant development within downtown west des moines including erection or renovation/replacement/addition (inclusive)of numerous large hotels/downtownresidential buildings resulting primarily seismic retrofitting/upgradingofthebuildingsto accommodate taller building heights thereby improving public access thereto without impairing historic character or architecture . The city experienced another boom in the 1920s and 1930s, when it became one of the most valuable communities in Iowa. However, during World War II West Des Moines suffered from a lack of resources and low population growth; its population only reached 1,500 after the war ended. In recent years, however, West Des Moines has been experiencing rapid growth again thanks to its strong economic prospects and growing diversity.
