This encouraged other entrepreneurs to move into town too and soon there were several stores lining main street! West Des Moines became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Chicago and St Louis during the early 19th century because it had good transportation connections! It also served as a hub for trade between easternIowa counties and southern Illinois where people bought goods like lumber or cattle! The mills gave rise to another industry in town – printing press work! Newspapers were very important during this time as they allowed people throughout America to share information quickly! When railroadroads came through town (in 1856), things intensified even more as farmers could sell products directlyto consumers instead of going through merchants! In fact, one local newspaper even went so far asto offer free subscriptions if citizens would bring their purchases back home “on credit”! There are still many reminders of those days today suchasthe old post office building which still contains mailboxes today!, but most importantly we have our rich history which can be seen throughout downtownWestDesMoines!!!
