Waukee has also played host to the annual Western Iowa Farmers' Market every May for over 20 years with proceeds benefiting local organizations

The town was laid out in 1867 by George Washington Power and named for him. It was platted in 1871, and the first post office was established in 1872. Waukee has grown since then, adding a school district and two hospitals to its roster of businesses and residents. In recent decades, Waukee has become an important transportation hub as it sits on I-35W and Interstate 80; it is also home to West Des Moines Airport. Waukee has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a settlement. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waukee were French Canadians who landed there during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. They built a trading post called "Lac du Flambeau" (now Lamar Hill), which served as a center for trade with Native Americans along the Mississippi River Valley. In 1836, settlers from Illinois arrived at Lac du Flambeau and began building their own settlements around it; these were known as "Townships One", "Township Two", etc., until they all consolidated into one entity under the name of Cedar Rapids on February 15,1861 (the date Cedar Rapids incorporation). In 1865, American troops under General John Custer led an effort against Sitting Bull's Sioux Nation near present-day Waukee; this event helped solidify White America's control over Indian Territory at that time. After the Battle of Little Bighorn in June 1890 - when over 1,500 Indian soldiers died - most Indians living east of Sioux City surrendered or left for good within weeks of the battle's end due to fear of another such engagement should similar events happen again soon (the situation changed only after General Crook became commander]). Many members of this community lost relatives in that conflict including future Mayor Don Ewing who perished while leading American forces during those engagements.. The following year saw significant growth when Cedar Rapids incorporated as a city; many new residents decided to move closer to downtown because of its' conveniences (such as easy access to public transportation). On November 7th 1898 - just four years after Cedar Rapids had officially become an city - Waukee got its first vote for mayor when Amos Sowder ran against incumbent Jno Henshaw...Sowder won by more than 3200 votes (#10 on the list compiled by The Iowa Pollster). At that point in its history (and still today), Waukee had more registered voters than any other municipality within our state! On July 10th 1907 US Congressman Charles Evans Hughesreceived word from President Theodore Roosevelt via dispatch rider that he would be making his way downstate for several months if Congress could not act on legislation providing financial support for World War I efforts; Hughes set out immediately upon receiving information about his destination and arrived in Waterloo late on July 14th so he could take possession of property currently owned by Representative Henry Claypools father-in-law David Drake (& later bought & used by Mayor Tom Barrett)). When news spread throughout Iowa about Mr Hughes' travel plans & arrival( especially given how difficult things had gotten since Congress hadn't even acted upon Governor Keating's original request ), hordesOf people spontaneously gathered outside his hotel room & houseboat while he slept®!™ Although eventually successful at getting what he wanted*, much excitement ensued&*½ Today we know this story primarily through images taken during his visit: People surrounding Mr Hughes' boat directly prior to his landing # wisconsinhistory #wiowa
