Waukee is a small town in Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Waukee is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Hiram Waukee, one of the pioneers who came to Iowa in 1846. In 1871, the first post office was established in Waukee and it remained operational until 1959. The community dates back to the early 1800s when wagon trains passed through this area on their way to Kansas City and other settlements. One of the earliest businesses in Waukee was a general store that operated from 1851-1855. A Methodist church was built in Waukee in 1875 and served as the town's main building until 1951 when it burned down. The current church building was built between 1951 and 1957 and has been used as a high school gymnasium since 1978. In 1907, two brothers founded a sawmill on the banks of Cedar Creek which still operates today as West Cedar Mills Ltd.. They were later joined by their father who also operated a mill until his death in 1923. After World War II, many farmers moved into what is now downtown Waukee from rural areas to increase production of wheat and other crops for national food shortages during the Cold War era; however, most residents left after farming became unprofitable due to changes within U.S.-Soviet relations or competition from nearby cities such as Des Moines or Ames which had larger populations and more developed economic systems. In 1950, Prentice Lee Christensen became Realtor/ real estate agent at Hickman & Associates; he would remain with that firm through its merger with Allyn & Bacon LLP (now Keller Williams) in 2005 before retiring at age 70 years old becoming only second person ever to retire as an all-time owner/operator of an Omaha law firm (after James Bischoff). He currently resides near downtown Waukee where he continues to participate actively in community affairs including serving on various boards and committees including being chairperson for several years consecutively of the Downtown Development Authority which helps promote development around downtown core area .

Waukee is a town in Waukee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Iowa City metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Waukee was Nathan Purdy in 1836. Waukee laid claim to land near present-day Decorah on October 10, 1851 and named it for John E. Wahlgren, an early settler there. In 1856 the men of Decorah organized a wagon train to travel to Council Bluffs and trade goods with that city's residents. When they reached Waukee on November 8, they were met by local citizens who had gathered around the large woodstove used for cooking food. They christened this new community "Waukee" after John E. Wahlgren and himself as its first trustees or directors. A post office called "Waukee" was established in December 1861, and operated until it was discontinued in 1902. The Town of Waukee was organized on February 14, 1886 by act of the Iowa General Assembly following a referendum vote by the people of its villages adjacent to it; these villages were Cedar Rapids (now part of Sioux City), Waterloo (now West Des Moines), Gilbertson (now Ankeny), Winterset (now Ottumwa), Goodyear Heights (now North Woodbury), Hawkeye Hills (present-day Indianola) and Storyville (the name given to Aurora). The Townsite Trustees were elected every two years from among their members with a two-thirds majority required for ratification; each trustee held office for four years renewable only by election at which time he/she resigned or could be removed without cause by his/her successor according to law then existing at that time concerning township organization etc.. On May 6th 1905 tornado damage occurred within walking distance of town limits with some homes destroyed including one owned by Jno Fenton which stood today on what is now State Road 7 just east of Interstate 80 exit 348acing out into Iowa farmland
Waukee was founded in 1855 by John L. Waukee and his wife, Anna. The town is named after Anna's father, George Waukee. The first post office in the town was established in 1857. In 1865, the name of the town was changed to Waukee because of a shortage of names for towns in Iowa at that time.
