Waukee is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waukee County. The town was founded in 1855 by Captain James Fenton and his family. It was named for William H. Waukee, one of Fenton's slaves who had helped him build a wagon road to Council Bluffs. The first post office in Waukee was established in 1857. Waukee became an incorporated city on November 1, 1903. On December 15, 1907, the city passed an ordinance providing for a fire department and public works system which included maintenance of roads and bridges as well as fire protection for the townspeople. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson visited Waukee and toured some of the local businesses before addressing a crowd of citizens at City Hall. Wilson praised the progress made by the city since he last visited it two years earlier while discussing American Progress with Mayor John Schieffer and other leaders from throughout Iowa City during their 100th Anniversary commemoration celebration that year. On October 11-12, 1916, Waukee hosted its first large agricultural fair which attracted over 350 exhibitors from all over Iowa and Illinois with crops including corn (maize), wheat ( barley), cotton (indigo), hops (malt) and potatoes; livestock such as cows, pigs and horses; poultry; gift items such as radios, phonographs etc.; arts & crafts including dollhouses; auto parts; boots & shoes; candy bars etc.; farm machinery including tractors, combines & milking machines; hogsheads of gasoline oil etc.; Kansas City cigars etc., among others In addition to agricultural exhibits there were model homes competed in various architectural styles from Queen Anne to Bungalow/Craftsman with prices starting at $25 per lot . There were also several 1917 Model T Ford Showroom displays across three floors where customers could buy or lease new cars or refresh old ones . In 1918 a bandstand was built next to then High School which served as both an entertainment venue for local concerts and also offered classes in music appreciation for school children
The first settlers in Waukee were J.F. and Lillie Herschel, who arrived in 1853. The town was named after Capt. George Waukee, a settler on the Iowa side of the border. The Herschels donated land to the town, which was platted in 1857 and named for them.
