The name Cedar Lake comes from a tree that grew near their cabin and they named their settlement after this tree. In 1852, Waukee incorporated as a village, and around this time some sawmills started up nearby which brought more people to Waukee over the next few years. In 1871, Harry Gleason built the first post office in Waukee and it served until 1907 when it was moved to Ames. In 1916, William Aiken founded Waukee Grain Elevator which still operates today. For many years, Waukee had its own school system which was eventually merged into Des Moines City Schools in 1955. In 1951, construction began on West Side Drive which would become one of the important streets inWaukee history later on. This road connected different parts of town and made it easier for people to get around without having to go down alleys or through fields full of crops
