Waukee is located in southwest Iowa on the eastern edge of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The city's ZIP code 72801 contains most of its population and businesses. Waukee is about east-northeast of downtown Des Moines and about northwest of I-235 and US-6. The first permanent settler in what would become Waukee was Elijah White, who arrived from Tennessee circa 1836. He erected a log cabin on a hill near present day State Highway 6 and Water Street in 1841. A post office called “Elijah’s Cabin” was established in 1846, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, John French founded Cedar Rapids & Waterloo Railroad which connected Cedar Rapids with Waterloo via Decorah (now Dubuque). In 1870, French built a depot at what is now Market Square to serve his passengers along this new line. A gristmill purchased by Frenchman in 1874 became known as the "French Mill" after him. In 1888, John French donated land to build a town hall which would serve as the nucleus for what would become Waukee; the cornerstone for this building was laid on November 17th of that year by Mayor James Hickey Sr.. On January 1st 1902, Waukee incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name "Waukesha". On July 1st 1922, part of Des Moines annexed into Waukee as well giving it a total population of 11,821 residents including 5883 children less than eighteen years old according to US Census data from 1920 however these figures do not include citizens or residents who were counted within annexations such Ashtabula County or Winneshiek County which formed during those years when both towns had populations over 10K residents but did not formally join together with their respective counties until after World War II when they merged into IA

In 1925, a branch of the Chicago Tribune moved its headquarters from Chicagoland to what is now known as Oneonta (near Rockford). This move created an opportunity for Waukee to become one of the new cities within the larger media market of Cedar Rapids/Iowa City/Des Moines proper.
