This could be changing soon though: A $5 million dollar grant from local businesses will help fund new development adjacent to White River that will include a number of sporty recreational opportunities close enough so that people can easily walk or bike there without having to leave their city homebase!

Waukee was founded in 1847 by Captain James P. Wahlgren and his wife, Eleonora. The town was named after General John A. Fremont, who helped wagon train settlers to the new land in what is now Iowa. In 1861, Waukee became the county seat of Polk County. In 1865, it was renamed to Waukee after General George S. Hancock, who had served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The town's first post office opened in 1847 and closed in 1851 due to lack of customers. It reopened in 1850 and remained open until 1902 when it burned down. The first store was built on Main Street near present-day State Highway 522 in 1849 and contained a bakery, grocery store, blacksmith shop,and two rooms for housing passengers on wagons coming into town from points eastward. In 1850-51 there were also three feed stores located within walking distance of the Post Office; one on each side of Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets NW These stores were discontinued around 1870s when railroads came into operation and transportation became much easier with automobiles
