Wells had a grocery store and two-and-a-half blocks of retail space including six department stores when it closed its doors in 1984. In 1978, The Coca Cola Bottling Company bought land neighboring Wells for $1 million which would become their corporate headquarters for Central Iowa. The company has used their former headquarters ever since and has contributed over $100 million to local economy through programs such as arts and culture initiatives; education programming; community development; environmental restoration; job training; marketing research; and scholarship opportunities for students from Waukee high school and local colleges/universities

Waukee is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waukee was founded in 1854. Waukee was platted on December 12, 1854 by James H. Harper and Jesse Custer. The first post office in Waukee was established on March 15, 1857. Waukee was named for George Washington Wiggins, an early settler in the area. The first school in Waukee opened in 1858 and taught students grades one through twelve. In 1860, Waukee had two stores and twenty-one residents. By 1870, the number of residents had increased to fifty-six and the store operated for three years until it closed due to economic reasons. A new store was built on Main Street in 1870 and it operated for sixty years until it closed too also due to economic reasons; however, this store has been preserved as a historical landmark today known as "The Wiggins Store". In 1902, Dave Thomas opened his grocery store which became one of the largest grocers east of the Mississippi River when it opened its doors for business. Since then several other businesses have opened up around Dave's Grocery including Lawndale Nursery Supply (now JBS Foods), Taco Bell (later taco bell restaurant), movie theater (the old Regal Cinema), HD truck stop/deli (now KFC), convenience store (Pepsi Refreshments) and now Bass Pro Shops with over $1 billion dollars' worth of products sold online across seventy-five countries annually! Since 2002 there has also been a high school located within walking distance called West View High School which offers classes from PreKindergarten through 8th grade along with sports teams that compete in state championships such as boys basketball Varsity Cheerleading & Wrestling Girls Volleyball & Soccer
