Waukee is a small town in Iowa, United States. It was established in 1854, and the population was 936 at the 2010 census. Waukee is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The town is named after George Washington Wahl, who donated land to the town. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first settler to arrive in Waukee was John A. Fenton. The community grew rapidly during its early years, because of its location on a fertile farming ground near the Des Moines River. In 1870, Waukee had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated city in 1907. Waukee has been home to several famous residents since its founding: George Washington Wahl (whose donation made Waukee possible), author Hiawatha Stevens (who lived there from 1925 until his death in 1951), and baseball player Stan Musial (whose family owned most of the land around Waukee). Today, many businesses located within walking distance of downtown make it one of the most vibrant towns within reach of Cedar Rapids commuters. One reason why so many businesses are located close to downtown is that much of what makes up today's downtown was built by developers when they started building new subdivisions along either side of the Des Moines River starting around 1960-1961; this created an environment where business owners could easily locate their properties without having to leave their homes or put up with high traffic rates or noise levels. This changed when zoning ordinances began being written specifically for Cedar Rapids neighborhoods beginning about 1970 which prohibited such developments

The town of Waukee was founded in 1871 by George and Emma Drake. The first post office was established in 1872. In 1898, the town had a population of 256 and it grew to 1,853 by 1920. Waukee's economy changed from agriculture to manufacturing during the 1960s and 1970s when Waukee became a center for heavy industries such as Rolex watches and jeans companies. However, since 1995, industry has declined in Waukee with the opening of several new businesses that have not been able to sustain themselves beyond their initial investment; this has led to a decline in population and an increase in poverty rates which have increased over time. In recent years there has been some progress made towards reversing these trends with new economic development projects having started up such as a new high school which opened in 2018 and plans for another large hospital project which are currently under construction or being planned; however these projects will only bring about temporary relief until more permanent solutions can be found which will help reverse the trend of decline within Waukee
