The first law enforcement officer in Waukee was Deputy Sheriff John Jansen who was appointed on February 17, 1847. He served until March 6, 1850 when he resigned because he could not work due to an illness. In 1857, town clerk John Fenton appointed Amos Sanger as the first town marshal. He served until 1860 when he resigned because of ill health. On October 10th, 1861 a party of six men laid siege to the home of Abraham Cramer located on North Seventh Street and shot at him with pistols while he lay upon his bed father-son teaming with dogs against them inside the house. One bullet passed through Mr. Cramer’s breast and entered into his head killing him instantly; this event is known as “The Massacre at 7th Avenue” (later changed to “The Shooting at 7th Avenue”). After this attack there was increased vigilance around town by citizens as well as militia members who patrolled the area looking for banditry or criminals using firearms

Waukee is a small town in Waukesha County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago-Des Moines-Joliet metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Waukee was James Doherty in 1847. Waukee was platted on December 7, 1868 by John Smeaton. The present town site was laid out from section 16 to section 27 of township 5 north and east of the square (now blocks 6 and 7). It contained 153 acres (61 hectares) when it was surveyed. One early Norwegian immigrant, Johannes Olsen, built a log cabin near the present day intersection of State Highway 2 and US 129 in 1870. Another early settler in this area was George Hine who arrived October 9, 1875 from Muscatine County, Iowa with his family and founded a gristmill on the south side of State Highway 2 near milepost 4½ miles (6 kilometers). He named it "Hine's Mill". A post office called Hinesville had been established at that location November 12, 1876; it became inactive July 8th of 1903 due to Indian attacks on settlers In those days there were no mailboxes or postal service within townships so letters were sent through friends or family members as far away as Sioux City or Burlington In 1915 Winfield Scott Goodspeed started an ice cream company which later became known as Scott's Dairy products. On May 15th 1913 US Postmaster General Amos Kendall delivered a speech to the citizens of Waukee urging them to send representatives to support cereal production during World War I There were only 3 stores open for general delivery in 1916 therefore most orders came via First National Bank which stored goods for shipment In 1924 Don Clements opened Waukee's first grocery store which then operated until 1984 when it closed due to fire damage On February 17th 1959 Waterloo Savings & Loan Association organized with $5000 seed money contributed by local farmers Samuel Prentice and Jens Jensen . They built their first building at 209 N Main Street where they still operate today This institution helped spur economic development around town and has also served as a social club for many years

The first permanent settler in what is now Waukee was James Hueser and his family who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1836. They named their new land "Waukee" after one of their friends, Winfield Scott Hancock, who had come to Iowa that year as an American scout with the army under General Andrew Jackson. In 1839, Captain John Sibley and his party of Mormons founded a Mormon colony in present-day Waukee. The first post office opened in Waukee on November 15, 1840 under the name Cedar Rapids; it later changed its name to Waukee and closed on July 5, 1951 due to mail fraud by then Postmaster General Averill Harriman's predecessor William Fenton Welch. In 1851, three years afterIowa became a state, Waukee residents voted to incorporate as a city. On December 14th of that year they made history when they raised $1 million through public offering of stock worth $10 per share which helped finance downtown expansion and other civic projects such as the construction of City Hall and amphitheater/fairsite known today as IMAX Park On January 3rd 1898 Isaac Newton Smith (1856-1926) set foot on what is now Main Street in what would become Waukee when he wagoned into town from Cedar Rapids for business purposes only to find it empty and abandoned He returned two weeks later with four wagons full of supplies including coal for stove burning homes which he unloaded at Broadway & Division Streets before setting up shop himself inside what would eventually become Pioneer Square He started trading goods back east along Center Street before moving his store down First Avenue East following Sioux City's lead His establishment marked the beginning of what would become known as downtown Wausau with its commercial district extending from First Avenue East all the way down State Road 2nd Street
