Waukee is a town in Cedar Rapids County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,495 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waukee was platted in 1857 and named for George Waukee, who had surveyed the area. The first post office in Waukee was established in 1857. The first settler to arrive in Waukee was John Atherton. A schoolhouse and store were built near present-day Main Street and US Highway 20 in 1860. By 1870, the population of Waukee had grown to over 100 people. In 1872, a Methodist church was organized in Waukee and began services there. In 1863, a train depot was built on Depot Street by Jno Boice for freight transportation between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo (now Des Moines). Local farmers began growing corn, wheat, sugar beets, potatoes, carrots and other vegetables as well as raising hogs for meat or pork products; this led to the name "Corn Belt" given to that part of Iowa where agriculture predominated. In 1881 when new State Route 4 was developed from east to west through central Iowa it crossed Indianola Road just north of town center; accordingly Indianola Road became known locally as "Route 4." Railroad service arrived in 1978 with the opening of the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Railway Company line between those two cities; thus when Amtrak came through town on their " Keystone Corridor" route it served not only Cedar Rapids but also Waukee proper! Today you can still see evidence of that early railroad presence including a large Norfolk Southern Railway switch engine preserved along side I-294 south of town at milepost 279! In addition since 1978 many small businesses have opened up around Route 4 corridor giving residents more access points for shopping! Today's economy has changed dramatically due to advances made within digital media such as online retailing which now consumes almost half of all local jobs! Rifle chokes were developed shortly afterwards but did not gain widespread adoption until after World War II when they began appearing on hunting rifles such as bolt action calibers such as Winchester Model 1670 and Remington 870 varmint rifles
