Waukee is a small city in Iowa, United States. The population was 3,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City metropolitan area. Waukee is located on the southern edge of Iowa's Driftless Area and its economy depends largely on agriculture. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waukee were French traders in 1682-83. The first permanent settler in the area was John Doane in 1831, who set up a farm about three miles west of present-day downtown Waukee. At that time it was a part of Clay County and only had a population of about 25 people. In 1836, George Stephenson founded the crude oil refinery called Stephenson & Co., which helped spur development around Waukee and other nearby towns during those early days of railroads. Today, Stephenson & Co.'s remains are still searchable via Google Earth within a few blocks of downtown Waukee. In 1857, John Atherton opened his own grocery store in what is now northwest corner of State Street and First Avenue NE in present-day downtown Waukee – also starting what would become an important commercial corridor for the town through its many years as an agricultural center (see also "Waukee History timeline" below). By 1880, almost all populated areas east or southeast of Cedar Rapids were served byrailroads with one exception: northeast corner where post office operated until 1907 before moving to Des Moines proper; this spot saw some rapid growth due to new streetcar service from eastern cities like Dubuque (now Iowa City) and Council Bluffs (thenayette), which brought more people and businesses into town center along State Street between NE 2nd Ave./First Avenue NE and 4th Ave./State Capitol NW.). This general trend continued throughout most of the 19th century as railroad travel increased across wide swaths of central Iowa; however due to technological advances linked to new petroleum discoveries during that period − including automobiles − rural communities north/west/ northeast OF Cedar Rapids rapidly became connected by roads leading southward from their centers while east/southcentral Iowans resisted such developments wholeheartedly."
