The first shots fired from a gun in Waukee were made at a range located on the south side of town. In 1857, two Congregational ministers, Rev. Fenton and Rev. Trimble, organized a club to shoot guns at Prairie du Chien Creek. This club continued to operate until 1892 when it merged with another rifle club to form the present-day Waukee Rifle Club. The growth of Waukee has been steady since then with population growth rate reaching 6 percent per year from 2000 to 2010. Downtown development has moved away from manufacturing towards apartment buildings and retail stores as more people move into the city limits for work or pleasure reasons. Today, Waukee is a vibrant community that offers many cultural attractions including art galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife options as well as educational opportunities such as Des Moines Community College and Prairie View A&M University

Waukee is located in Polk County on the west bank of the Wabash River. The river forms most of its border with neighboring Cedar Rapids to the north and east, and Linn Lake to the south. According to the 2010 census, Waukee has a total area of , all land. The first settlers in what is now Waukee were two families from Illinois who came overland from Nauvoo during 1840–1841. They named their new town after General David Dixon's army that had just won a great victory against Mexico near modern-day Cedar Rapids on November 16, 1840; this event is also mentioned in pioneer history as "the Battle of Waukee". In 1847, five men from Waterloo Township (now Waterloo) decided to move to Platte County because they saw an opportunity for land grants there that were not available elsewhere in Iowa. The men organized themselves into a company and started out wading through knee-deep water across Long Creek to find suitable land grant territory which they did not have enough money to buy outright but which they could prospect for by examining maps and watching Indian trails. By September 1848 they had surveyed 4 square miles (10 km2) of land grant territory including present-day Waukee itself and had laid out a village on it called Plymouth Rock (later renamed Sioux City). The first store opened in Plymouth Rock on October 13, 1848 by Jens Wilhelm Nordstrom; it was run by Ebenezer Cookman until he died six months later due to yellow fever contracted while working in Plymouth Rock. On December 6th, 1850 Nathan Bechtel arrived from St Louis with his family and built himself a cabin about three-quarters mile (1 km) northwest of Plymouth Rock; he became one of the original proprietors of Plymouth Rock Village. A post office was established at Plymouthrock on January 8th, 1850, under the name "Plymouth Rocks" but soon changed to "Wahiawah" after Chief Winthrop Sockyanka's estate near Wahiawah Falls downstream from Plymouthrock village where Sockyanka lived full time until his death in 1862 when Wahiawah Village passed into private hands again In 1851 Isaac Babcock settled around what is now downtown Waukee along Cedar Road which then connected with Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today before connecting back up with I-70/Iowa State Highway 12 near downtown Des Moines On May 20th 1861 John Bierstadt arrived herefrom Council Bluffs IA with his party consisting mostly German immigrants settling northeast today’s West Des Moines After World War 1 many farmers leftIowa looking for opportunities more promising closerto farmlands so they moved into west central Iowa such as Dodge City KS Omaha NE Topeka KS Wichita KS etc moving their homesites closer together until finally becoming known as Woauaians or “many people”

In 1881, the town became a county seat, and in 1907 it was renamed Waukee after Iowa's first Territorial Governor. The city of Waukee was incorporated in 1912 and has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in Iowa.
