Waterloo is a small town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. Waterloo was founded in 1872 by the merger of two villages, West Waterloo and North Waterloo. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Waterloo was J.D. Howe. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the village block in 1872. In 1893, the village named its first post office after General George Washington, Jr., who had been president of the United States at that time and also an important figure in Canadian history. In 1914, when Johnson County was organized, Waterloo became one of its original townships. The name "Waterloo" originated from a farmstead called "Halt's Brook", located on present-day Spring Street within the limits of the town center. By 1919, however, most residents had moved away from what is now Waterloo due to environmental concerns about nearby Williamsburg Dam's water storage capacity approaching 100 million gallons per day (3×10 000 m3/s2). However, some kept their homes and businesses until as late as 1970; during that time there were only three active businesses left in town - two grocery stores and one plastics factory - all closed since then except for a few light industrial relics still extant today In 2000-2001 local taxpayers created a wind turbine project which provided power for many local businesses which reopened after being shut down for years due to lack of energy availability The current population of Waterloo is around 460 people according to 2010 census data

The town was named after the battles of Waterloo and Fontenoy which took place near the town in 1814. In 1860, it became a city with a population of 100,000 people. In 1912, it merged with Ottumwa to form Des Moines.
