Waterloo is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,479 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Waterloo was founded in 1857 as a station on the Illinois Central Railroad. The town was named for General George Washington's army officer and friend, Major-General Charles K. Waterloo. The first post office was established in 1861. In 1879, the town moved to its current site on the north bank of the Des Moines River. Waterloo is located at (41.817362, -93.623503). According to the 2010 Census, it has a total area of , of which (or 99%) is land and (or 3%) is water.[1] As of the census[2], there are 1,479 people living in Waterlootownships; 585 households; and 375 businesses,[3] making it an extremely diverse community with over 60% of its residents being from one or more races.[4][5] Waterloo began as a small stop along the Illinois Central Railroad on what is now known as Old Lewiston Road just east of present-day Waterloo Village. In 1857, General George Washington's army arrived in Warsaw Township and stopped at what is now old Lewiston Road/West Avenue for lunch before continuing their journey southward through Polk County towards Des Moines City Limits where they would later battle Lee's Army during America's first war against Great Britain that led to independence from Great Britain three years later – July 4th 1846! The Townspeople had been working hard putting up fences around their new settlement since they were laid out square with lots fronting each other instead of scattered around like they did back then on account of high water levels that often spilled over into adjoining townships when rains came downpours! And so it continued until about 1860 when things started to change with reports coming back from captain James Penty who surveyed part of present day Waterloo township including present day West Side which today containsOld Lewiston Rd & State Rte 614” about 8 miles due WSW cornering & extending NW by E 8Vi miles he noticed many beautiful Female Waterslides carved into high bluffs overlooking both streams within ½ mile limits across his survey…. This suggests that somebody must have seen these amazing falls while walking or riding horseback some 2 or 3 times per day back then if not more…. So long story short after much debate between Board Minutes Commissioners Haggerty & Purdy w/ help from Mr Porter Surveyors Mills we approved naming our new place “Warmwater” After watching these Beautiful Falls for some time we decided that this name would befitting given its location & surroundings! So far so good but soon enough problems arose because nobody wanted to do anything about filling up all those nice female waterslides because nobody could get there horses&dragons fast enough!!! So finally someone got brave enough to ask Captain Penty if he might start taking fresh water drinks for troops stationed here especially during Quarter Finals examinations….. So away went Captain Penty with his wagonloads full of cold well drawn water!!!! And thus began oneof history’s most famous military engagements when American forces faced off against British forces under Sir John Moore aka Sir John Cullum aka Lord Nelson @ 7 o’clock AEST November 22nd 1755!!! Wellington lost only 7 men killed out side 350 American casualties!!!!! That’s right ladies and gentlemen………………..It wasn't pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It became a county seat in 1856 and was named after General Richard Yates, who served as commander of the Union army during the American Civil War.
