This railway allowed farmers to get their goods to market more quickly and gave rise to many businesses that still operate today such as meatpacking plants (which are now closed), chemical companies (whose products are no longer made in Waterloo), breweries (which have since been moved away), cotton mills (now all closed),and UIUC's law school which continues to offer undergraduate degree programs in business administration and engineering among others. With so many businesses active here today it can be easy to forget just how important agriculture once was for this community - not only did it provide jobs for locals but also helped create infrastructure that supports current industries across Iowa thanks to its excellent soil quality.

According to the US Census Bureau, it has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 614 people, 236 households, and 171 families residing in the town. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% Black or African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1% of the population

The city’s infrastructure continued to be upgraded through the years including the construction of new streets, bridges, and tunnels. The city also became known for its beautiful architecture which has been featured in popular culture both nationally and internationally.
