In 1851, a group of farmers in Waterloo, Iowa decided to start a Shooting Club. The club's first meeting was held on October 12th and the first gun was fired. At that time, most people in Waterloo used shotguns for target shooting. As handguns became more popular in the 1840s, people started using them for hunting and self-defense. In 1871, the club changed its name to the Waterloo Rifle Club and began using rifles for general shooting purposes. It wasn't until 1916 when they started using pistols for target shooting. In 1937, they changed their name to the Waterloo Pistol Club and still use pistols today as their primary firearms choice. Waterloo was founded in 1855 by Norwegian immigrants who named it for the Battle of Waterloo. In 1868, the community changed its name to Waterloo when it became part of the newly created city of Des Moines. The city incorporated as a village in 1907 and then as a town in 1925. The current downtown area was developed around 1914-1915 when the Des Moines & Santa Clara Railroad built a depot there and other nearby businesses became connected to it. The railroad left Waterloo after World War I but saw renewed traffic and development until it disappeared altogether in the late 1990s. The history of Waterloo begins with its namesake battle, which took place on April 6th 1865 between American Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant and Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell (the man who would later lead Confederate troops during Reconstruction). After two days of fighting that resulted in over 50 dead on both sides, Grant ordered his army to retreat back into Missouri while Ewell pursued them all the way back to Virginia Beach,. Aftermath included many casualties for both sides with many buildings destroyed or damaged including Wellington House which served as headquarters for Grant’s army during their retreat. Waterloo continued to grow following its incorporation as a village and soon became known for its wide variety of products available local farmers could produce such as flour, hops, cheese, eggs etc.. It also boasted one of first public library systems west of Broadway in Iowa City.. In 1915-1920s growth slowed due to World War I however by 1923-1929 male residents had outnumbered female residents 20% to 10%. This stagnation led to heavy industry moving out towards larger cities like Des Moines while remaining rural towns lost some employment and population density leading to more schools becoming closed down than opened up; this gave rise to what is now known as “The Rust Belt” moniker given that much industrial activity once took place within easy commuting distance from major metropolitan areas but stopped short near smaller villages/towns offering little economic opportunity outside those areas outside college or government jobs

Waterloo's many landmarks include the magnificent Waterloo National Laboratory, the State Capitol Building, and the University of Iowa.
