This road was also used by wagon trains carrying goods needed for early Iowa settlements such as Dakota Territory and Council Bluffs, which made up much of what are today Nebraska and Kansas today. Another significant aspect of Waterloo's history comes from its role during World War I as an Allied airbase from which RAF Fighter Command operated against German aircraft during World War I. The planes flown by these Allied pilots were some of the most famous machines ever built, and their success against enemy planes earned them respect throughout war-time Europe and beyond. Additionally, Wellington Air Field (later renamed RAF Bentwaters) located just northeast of town was home to one of America’s first fighter forces; units such as Ninth Air Force flew Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses into battle against Nazi Germany during World War II). Today, many people living within walking distance of either Wellington or RAF Bentwaters remember those days through public programs like "Bombing Belgium" which takes place each year on Memorial Day weekend near both fields!
