Waterloo, Iowa is a small town in Webster County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Waterloo is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of the Quad Cities region and is bordered by Cedar Rapids to the north and east, Davenport to the south and west, and Dubuque to the northwest. The first settler in Waterloo was Dr. James Hickey who arrived in 1836. Hickey's family farm was one of two on which settlers built their first homes in Waterloo Township. A post office called "Waterloo" was established in 1838, but it did not remain open long because it was Frequently visited by travelers from Cedar Rapids who were taking up land grants offered for them around that time. After Hickey's death his widow married Jacob Kappman and they took over his farm which added another 200 acres (0 hectare) to their holdings within six years of its establishment. This gave them enough land to build two more houses on when they moved into their current home in 1840. The Kappmans continued to live there until 1903 when they sold it to Herman Wirths who lived there until his death in 1916; then it passed through several families before being bought by Ethel Rodgers who kept it until her death in 1984 which left it vacant again until purchased by local resident George Weiser; since then it has been caretaker property with occasional visits from employees of the West Side Drainage District where it borders Cedar Rapids Odd Fellows Cemetery In 1856 Union Pacific Railroad began construction across Webster County on what would become known as The Quad Cities Line (later renamed after Chicago). For a short while Waterloo had an important railroad station where trains stopped for passengers coming from Cedar Rapids or Davenport on their way eastward along The Quad Cities Line. When this station closed down however traffic dropped off so much that no new station ever developed here; today only a few pieces of infrastructure remnant from this time including some switches and tracks still stand around backyards while most of what once connected Waterloo with The Quad Cities now lies buried under downtown Des Moines This period also saw many scientific advancements made here such as using water power for irrigation during winter months when other methods were too cold or too wet; also during this time early forms of air conditioning were invented The present day village started growing up around these advances although many people still resided near original farms due primarily to commuting opportunities available outside Of Omaha In 1907 Wirths' children donated 320 acres (14 hectares) bordering Elmira Road between Waterloo & Davenport Streets south west corner extending into Dubuque County for agricultural use only making sure none went to development By 1924 all commercial development had stopped due mainly to World War I shortages caused by Austria’s entry into that war while neighbouring towns experienced rapid growth thanks largelyto heavy demand generated by businesses moving out East after WWI . That same year however Addison Shearer purchased 640 acres (27 hectares) adjoining Elmira Road between Waterloo & Davenport Streetsnorthwest corner extending into Dubuque Countyfor industrial use only making sure none went towards development yet again However sales ended soon afterwards due largely To increased competition brought about by rivals like Textron Leathereland General Electric whose factory relocated nearby In 1925 adding 810 additional acres (.29 hectare) northwesterly onto Shearers land creating what is now known as Shearer Park adding 20 more Residential UnitsOpened its doors becoming one of citywide earliest public housing developments In 1934 2nd Ward Alderman John Fenton leased 10 acre (.40 hectare) lot adjacent Hecker Street southeast side facing Capitol Drive turning back onto 400th Street fronting University Avenue became known as "Fenton Place" Today's home ground for both Army National Guard units stationed at Ft Dodge Post #1B & #2A Waterloo Township seat: Waterlooby Building dates back 5 years!
