In 1927, Bethlehem Steel Corporation moved its operations from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Urbandale after purchasing land there for $1 million. The plant produced steel products such as automobiles and railway tracks until it closed in 1996. It left behind an estimated two dozen legacy businesses such as Arco-Labs Inc., American Metalsmiths Association (AMI), Bethlehem Steel Corp., First National Bank (FNB), Kalamazoo Lumber Co., Midwestern Electric Power Company (MEP), Pabst Brewing Company (Pabst Blue Ribbon) and United States Rubbermaid Filtration Plant No 2 (URBANITE). The town has experienced several economic downturns over the past few decades; however, overall job growth has been strong due to Higher education jobs being created especially through Iowa State University's Ames Campus which opened up in 2007 by ISU President Lew Ruppert According to The Gazetteer ofUrbana County Illiniwek History Vol 8 p159 “In 1901 Urbane had only one business: Jardine’s grocery store which sold groceries direct from farmers on credit with no middleman involved …today many of these stores are still open but some have been replaced by convenience stores or strip malls while others have been abandoned altogether….Jardine’s building still stands today on Main Street across from IHOP restaurant although it is now used for storage purposes…..the first church built here wasMethodist Episcopal Church which was erected on May 9th 1865 by George Fenton… later that year Baptist Protestant Congregational Church also opened….On November 3rd1896 Mr John Vennir made his first sale at auction when he offered goods at 1 dollar per pound.. soon enough other merchants followed suit with prices ranging from 1¢ to 5¢ per pound…Auctioneer Vennir continued this pattern until 1902 when he stopped selling items at auctions altogether because he found it too expensive to do so every week….Today most people know about Vennir’s Auctioneers when they see an old grain elevator or barn nearby that has been restored to its former glory…..During World War II many local businesses contributed their goods and services including Cement Works where sixty men worked day and night manufacturing munitions……Today most people know about these businesses when they visit either Hwy 11 or US 61 north of town where there are several lots left undeveloped that could potentially become centers for industry if development takes place…." There were three schools within walking distance of each other during school days: Holy Cross School District #2 on Broadway between Center Road & Elmira Road operated out of a garage attached to Mrs Reeve's home; Stroudsburg Union High School operated out of Gresham Catholic Church between Elmira Rd & Center Road; Both classes met inside Mrs Reeve's house during recess except for Extracurricular activities like band concerts played outdoors on Sundays outside both schools starting around 1950 There were also two libraries within walking distance each other: One served students adjacent to Holy Cross School District #2 while another served students adjacent to Stroudsburg Union High School . These two libraries formed what is currently known as East Central Library System . After leaving high school all seniors attending either school went into government Employees Retirement System called “Platinum Plan” unlike today where most adults receive retirement checks directly from their employers

Urbandale is a town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1871 by citizens of freight train stations on the Des Moines River. The original name for the town was "Orcharddale". In 1893 it changed to "Urdale" because of its location near Urden (now Urbandale) on the Iowa side of the river. The first post office in Urbandale was established in 1872. The first settler in Urbandale was George Sinton. In 1881, there were only nine residents and three businesses in Urdale. By 1890, there were over fifty residents and twelve businesses in Urdale. The urbane architecture style became popularized by settlers who chose to live close to nature with their own small towns-style architecture housing stores and homes that blended into surrounding rural scenery. In 1902, when Douglas County was organized,Urbandale became one of its six original townships. It remained an unincorporated community until 1974 when it became a part of the city of Waterloo. In 1984, Urbandale absorbed neighboring village of New Brighton into its municipality limit which increased its population from 1,500 to 2,000 people within five years as a result of suburban growth around Waterloo and other nearby communities%. Today's economy is tied closely with agriculture due to irrigation water usage which has been an important part of local food production since before railroads came through town
