Urbandale, Iowa was once a small town located in central Iowa. However, over time it has become one of the leading Midwestern towns for astronomy. In fact, Urbandale is home to the world’s first astronomical observatory and it is also considered the birthplace of modern telescope technology. The history of Urbandale begins with a group of farmers who set up an observatory in 1851. It wasn’t until 1903 that the first true telescope was constructed in Urbandale. That same year, Ohio State University donated land to help build a new astronomical complex. The complex included two telescopes and several laboratories used by astronomers around the world. The Urbandale Observatory was decommissioned in 1966 but its legacy lives on through research programs at OSU and elsewhere. Today, Urabandale is still home to some of the finest astronomical equipment on the planet and it continues to serve as a major center for learning about science and technology

Urbandale is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. It lies along the south bank of the Des Moines River, east of the city of Sioux City. The population was 809 at the 2010 census. The Urbandale post office was established in 1882, and continued in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The first store in Urbandale was a general store and wagon shop owned by Wm. Henson. A gristmill and sawmill were also built here during this time. In 1907, a railroad station was built here to serve the town and surrounding farms. This station remained active until it closed down in 1942. A new school building was constructed here between 1951 and 1956; this building served as the town's high school from 1954 until 1984 when it became a Community College District (CCD) campus. In 1996, Urbandale School District #2 merged into CCD to form one large school district with Urabandale as its central location for students throughout Marshall County.
