In 1918, Orville & Edwin Post installed a central heating plant that helped to revive Urbandale's economy during World War I. After years of decline due to various factors such as lack of industry or an overabundance of corn products, Urabandale regained some vitality beginning in the early 1960s when Iowa Agricultural College began offering agricultural training programs for local farmers. The Town Council began planning for what would become North City Place Shopping mall back in 1974 when then Mayor Randy McCarthy purchased land east of Interstate 80 to accommodate growth within his city limits while still allowing easy access to downtown by pedestrians and cyclists alike from across town since that time North City Place has been one of Urbandale’s defining features both physically and economically with more than 1 million visitors utilizing its surface parking garage every year throughout just about all seasons making it possible for nearly everyone who desires something tangible or intangible to experience something great within minutes by walking or biking away from their home without ever having had any contact with said city government entity whatsoever!
Urbandale was founded in 1881 by George Washington Carver, a white cotton farmer. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Iowa River and access to markets. In the 1920s, Urbandale became a center of Operation Crossroads, an effort to provide food for World War II veterans. The post office was closed in 1970 and replaced by the present-day Urbandale City Hall.
