The land that today makes up Urbana and Urbana Heights were once part of what were called four separate townships: all within Hardin County but two within Muscatine Township which also included Burlington and Clear Lake counties as well as Beech Grove Township in Addison County In 1853 George Aurbandale set out from his home near Burlington on a wagon train carrying pioneers Vera Boggs (1801-1892), John Purdy (1788-1851), Isaac Smith (1789-1865) and others to what would become Urbane Prairie where they erected cabins and began stocking up on provisions for their journey westward into Oklahoma Territory under US President James Kapp along routes now known as I-80 & I-435
