A post office called "Urbana" was established in 1839, but it was discontinued in 1847 because of construction on the new Des Moines River Railroad. In 1865, James Waddell founded Waddell Lumber Co., which became one of the leading lumber companies in Iowa. In 1902, John Hickey purchased Waddell's interest in Lumber Mills Inc., making him the first Native American to own a controlling share of an Iowa company. Over time, other Indian tribes began to settle around Urbane Valley; these include Potawatomi (1792), Kickapoo (1807), Winnebago (1828), Cheyenne (1862), Sioux (1868), Creeks (1902-present) In 1907, land north of where Urbandale now stands was donated by John Fenton for use as a rural school district called "Fentonville". That same year saw construction begin on what would become one of America's largest municipally owned hospitals: St Joseph's Hospital & School District No. 1 opened its doors with 221 beds on May 15th, 1907 In 1945, during World War II, much of central Urbandale were destroyed bybombing when Japanese forces bombed two important industrial areas - Pohl Paper Company located at 503 South 8th Street and Koppers Rubber Works at 625 West Seventh Street - both completely destroyed by bombing . neither building still stands today . however some parts have been reconstructed including the addition of a large glass dome over the entranceway to Koppers Rubber Works which can be seen from Interstate 70 southbound

Urbandale is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 581 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–East Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Urbandale were James and Esther Hensen who moved from Denmark in 1854. They built a cabin around 1857 on what is now Deighton Road. In 1888, John Papp and his family settled here and he named the community after their home state of Illinois. In 1911, George Sargent arrived from Ohio with his family and founded Sargent's Stores which became one of Urbandale's most important businesses. Urbandale has been through many changes over its history but it has always been a vibrant community with an active local culture and economy. The community currently boasts several cultural landmarks including the Methodist Church which was built in 1909 and remains one of the town's most popular attractions, as well as the old post office building which served as both a library and social hall until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. Urbandale is also home to some important historical sites such as the William Davenport Manufacturing Company Factory where many early American manufacturers made their products, as well as Old Dutch Village which was once a thriving African American agricultural village that ceased to exist when white people bought all of the land within its boundaries in 1960s.
On November 1, 1847, Urbandale was founded as a post office in the Iowa Territory. The town was named for John Urbanski, an early settler and landowner. By 1860, the population of Urbandale had grown to over 100 people. In 1868, the United States Post Office moved from Cedar Rapids to Urbandale and remained there until it was transferred to Des Moines in 1966.
