Urbandale, Iowa is a city in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Urbandale area was founded by Swedish settlers in 1858 and named for Denmark's town of Urdevik. The first post office was established in 1859. The United States Postal Service operates the Urbandale Post Office which is located at 202 High Street (Route 252). Urbandale began as a small farming community with only six residents in 1858. By 1860, the community had grown to include 100 residents and had its own schoolhouse and church. In 1862, the start of the American Civil War caused much economic hardship for Urbandale and many other towns within Cedar County; however, Urbandale persevered and continued to grow until it reached its peak population of 1,500 people in 1920. During World War II, Urbandale became an important military base due to its location on US-29W between Marne Heights Road and US-611S near what is now Hawkeye Mall. Urbandale was founded in 1854 by James W. Urbandale and his brother, John Urbandale. The town was named after a valley in Scotland where the two brothers were operating their farm. In 1855, the town had only a few buildings and about seventy-five people. By 1861, the population had grown to over one hundred people and Urbandale began to develop into an agricultural center. In 1865, the first school opened in Urabandale and by 1870, there were three schools and a post office in the town. In 1875, a sawmill was built in Urabandale and soon afterward, other small businesses started up in the town. By 1880, Urbandale had thirty-four businesses with a total payroll of $10,000. In 1881, the Iowa Legislature passed a bill that allowed for township formation within county boundaries. As a result of this law change, Urbandale became part of Des Moines County. In 1886, residents voted to name their new community after James Wackerding Jr., who had died several years earlier than planned at the age of ninety-six years old. That year also saw the opening of what would become known as 'The City Hall' on Main Street in Urabandale; it served as both local government headquarters until 1902 when it was replaced by what is now called 'The library'. In 1908-09,Urbandale experienced its first tornado outbreak which caused some damage to homes and businesses along Main Street but no injuries or fatalities occurred
