Urbandale is a town in Geary County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Geary County. The name of the town comes from a local creek that empties into the Des Moines River. The Urbandale post office was established in 1857, and its first official occupant was Michael Quinn. In 1882, David Kirsch bought the land comprising what is now Urbandale from Hiram Scudder for $2,500 cash. Kirsch renamed it to Urbandale in commemoration of his purchase. The first store in Urbandale opened its doors on Main Street on October 1, 1882. It was later replaced by a movie theater which closed in 1984 but still stands as a building on First Avenue near US-23rd Street. In 1896, John Fenton built a flour mill on what is now First Avenue and Clinton Street; this mill continued to operate until it closed in 1951. On December 8, 1912, city fathers voted to rename all of Geary County to honor Drury Lane Carbondale (1863-1948), an early settler and mayor of Urbana Heights who had made significant contributions to the growth and development of Urbane Heights and Geary County generally. On February 10th 1954 during extreme cold weather conditions much of central Iowa experienced record breaking lows with temperatures below . Many residents turned out for "the freeze" which lasted all day long! The temperature at night dropped below zero several times! As developing areas such as Cedar Rapids became more accessible through Interstate 80 or other roadslanes new businesses cropped up including ice cream parlors along I-80 just east of town limits! A small grocery store operated by Mrs.........on MainStreet before closing around 1990 due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores near by

Urbandale is an old town in Urbandale County, Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1847 by the merger of two settlements, West Urbandale and North Urbandale. The towns were named for a short distance to the east of where they now stand, on the northwest side of what is now Cedar Rapids. The first settler in what is now Urbandale was Samuel Hagerty, who moved to the area in 1837 from Ankeny. In 1840, James White settled near present-day Urbandale and built a cabin there. In 1845, John Sargent arrived at West Urabandale and established a farm there. He also built a log cabin near present-day Southwick Avenue and First Street. The following year, Isaac Weeden erected a house at East Urabandale which served as the town's first court house. In 1847, when Orville Mapes relinquished his claim to land lying south of current day Highway 6 between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo (later US 64), he sold half of that property to John McLaren for $500 cash plus 10 acres (4 hectares) thereof on which to build a post office and storehouse. The other half of Mapes' land was patented to him by Territorial Governor Edward Sibley on November 9, 1848. This parcel became known as North Urbandsale after its location north of where it currently stands on the northwest side of Cedar Rapids Proper
Lincoln County was organized on November 1, 1846, from portions of Dubuque and Iowa counties. The county seat was Urbandale. On December 12, 1852, the cession of Cassia Township to Urbandale made it a part of the new county. In 1854, the United States Census found that Urbandale had a population of 191 people. The population growth continued inUrbandale until the censuses were taken in 1910 and 1920. After World War II ended, there was little growth in the town other than increasing housing prices and development within its borders. The last census conducted inUrbandale was taken in 2010.
